The Plantation at Leesburg

Choral society

The Plantation Choral Society began in 1988 and is one of the oldest continuing activities at the Plantation. It is a mixed chorus of about 60 Plantation residents who love to sing. Two concerts are presented each season, a Holiday concert in December and a spring concert in late March or April. We meet once a week to practice.  New members are always welcome!

The chorus sings many types of music – popular music from yesterday and today, show tunes, music from various religions, carols, patriotic music, and some light classical music. Some members also sing solos or in small ensemble groups.  Members of the chorus have also sung with our director at concerts outside of the Plantation.

In February the chorus joins over 200 other area singers in an event called Crescendo.  This is a concert wherein the board members (of which our Director is one) directsfour pieces of music with all participants as one large massed choir.  Each participating choir is invited to sing a piece independently providing for a variety of music for the whole concert.

The Choral Society is under the professional direction of Ms. Marcie Winter. Marcie holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Central Oklahoma and her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University. She taught middle school and high school in Oklahoma, Missouri and Florida for a combined 12 years and has taught music to Senior Adults for 13 years. These ages range from 12 – 102! Marcie currently serves Community Church, a United Methodist Congregation, as their Minister of Worship and has six performing groups within the church. In Florida, she has also served at Lake Deaton United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church (Leesburg) and New Life Presbyterian Church. Besides the Community Church music ministry, Marcie also directs Continental Singers at Continental Community and Christian Voices United.

The Chorus also is privileged to have Mary Ann Rockenbach as our accompanist.  Mary Ann has also shared her talents with The Villages and surrounding communities for 30 years. She was a fixture as the organist/pianist for The Sunday Celebration service at Church on the Square under the direction of Bill Doherty and Central Florida Lyric Opera. Mary Ann also served as the first full- time Minister of Music at Hope Lutheran Church for eight years, followed by a position as choir director/organist at the Congregational Church, now in Summerfield, FL. She currently plays for services at Community UMC in Fruitland Park and is approaching her tenth anniversary there. One of the highlights of her time at Community was the creation of The Christian Chorus, which has been reborn as Christian Voices United.
